Measuring Ourselves

Part I: About the Station

* Give the title of the module/station : Measuring Ourselves
* Who was in your group? Joe
* The group is trying to figure out the relationship between height, wingspan, and foot size.
* we went outside and measured each group member and recorded the results.
* I helped make sure the tap measure was lined up while the other group members got measured.

Part II: Your Work

# Is there a relationship between height and wingspan? The height and the wingspan are very similar. Each student had a difference of 3 inches or less.

# How can you tell from the graphs? We can tell by looking at the imaginary line of best fit. All the plots are near the diagonal cutting the graph.

# Is there a relationship between height and foot length? The taller you are, the larger the foot size you have.

# How can you tell from the graphs? We see that the higher the height, the farther the person is on the foot size scale.

Part III: What did you think?

* Answer the following questions individually:
o What did you like about this activity, if you were the student? What about if you were the teacher?
Student: I would like this activity because it lets me physically do something. I have to get out of my chair in order to get everyone measured. This also lets me get a better understanding of where the data came from.
Teacher: It lets the teacher see how well students interact in a group. I think teachers like this because it puts the kids on a path to independence. Its also a good breather for the teacher since we can be relaxed because we watch and help the students. Its a behind the scenes task.

o What did you not like about this activity, if you were the student? What about if you were the teacher?
Student: I didn't like the program we used to graph. Yes, it was easy to use, but, its like teaching a student English and in the middle of the year telling them they can only speak in Spanish. I feel that if you start the kids on a simpler graph program, when they get to excel, it might be confusing. So I think it would be best if they were in 5th grade to use excel.
Teacher: Personally, I feel like I might forget to bring enough tape measures to class. Other then that, I liked the activity.

o What were the most interesting and/or surprising parts of this activity?
I am not sure what to be surprised about. We have done things like this in the past so I have already seen the results. I also was surprised by how much I enjoyed doing it again. Its nice to feel like a kid again. I still feel like a kid inside so I want to preserve my youth through eduction.

Engaging Our Youngest Minds

http://k12online.ning.com/video/engaging-our-youngest-minds

The lady in the video is telling a story about a girl who was invested in changing the world. Her passion was saving animals and collecting change to keep them alive. The shocker of this video is that she is in preschool. The person mentions there is a lack of passion among youth. She talks about how schools are pushing students away from passion. She wants passion to truly thrive in our schools. She wants to keep the natural curiosity of the youth for as long as possible. She thinks it’s the most important to help conduct learning. The lady wants this little girl Hailey to publish her ‘books’ online and communicate with scientists. Technology isn’t what is engaging, it’s the passion that helps them engage with the learning. Technology is going to connect them to their future. This lady is giving Hailey the tools she needs in the future to push her passion as far as possible. The parents wrote a note about how learning never ends and they hope that this lady will keep helping Hailey like she has been so far. In the end to sum up what she has been saying is a clip of this adorable boy. He is playing Jason Mraz on a guitar and he looks to be about 4 and a half years old. Overall I think her message was that passion is what drives this world and we need to make sure our youth don’t forget it!

Teachers Webpage

This is a myfunteacher website that highlights miss powels classroom. I don't think she has a sponsor for this site but she seems to be connected to Beatty elementary school in Vegas. The reason she put this site together was to aid students and parents with the education process. She puts in many resources for parents that will help there students complete the class. I love the design of this web page because she makes it known that it gets constantly updated. Her theme on the homepage is valentines day which is right around the corner. The tabs are clearly and easily labeled for easy navigation. This is a personal page and there is no obvious adds posted on here making her motivation soley on her students. I don't think i would use it in my class but i could use it as inspiration for my own web page as an educator.

Teaching Sites

http://www.teachingideas.co.uk/
The website I chose is Teaching Ideas. The website seems independent from any large organization. This website seems to be created by Mark Warner who's name appears all over the site. I would assume his motivation is to help teachers with lesson plans. If a teacher is stuck on what to do for class, he/she can go on here and get ideas from people who have taught the subject before. This website was made as a took to make teachers lives a little easier. The website does look slightly outdated though its pretty easy to navigate. I only saw 2 adds on this page. This makes me think he made this website more for teachers then his own personal gain. This is valuable because I can talk to other teachers who have been in my shoes before and get their valued input.
