Yup yup! That’s me! And as you can see I LOVE talking! I’m always the one to make life just a little bit louder! If you ask anyone that truly knows me, my voice is loud! Not necessarily in volume, but in my message. I’m never scared to speak my mind for those who have lost their voices. This branches out to my fight with the civil rights and equality. My voice is the tool I can share with the world for the better of all human beings. All I have to do is be loud enough to be heard! My goal in life is to always learn. Yes we learn every single day no matter how old we are but how many people live their life open it? I know that I come to school to learn and its more important then grades themselves since grades are supposedly a reflection of how much we learn. But it seems like society will never let me do that since all academic courses need to get grades. I know that colleges want to see those two numbers and either your in or your out. They don’t care about how much growth I’ve had since my freshman year yet they do care about how many AP’s you take or your 4.5 GPA and 33 on the ACT. I just wish that for once people graded me for what I’ve become. And I want everyone to consciously be learning for the better of themselves and not just for money.

I really wouldn’t change much. Yes I have learned a lot but I am still the same person. But that doesn’t mean sociology didn’t have an impact. It changes the way I have looked at race and social class. One major change would be who cares if school don’t grade you on your growth. I’d hope then when I finish college, then all my life lessons will help me find the jobs that those people who didn’t grow wont get. As long as I know I learned I am happy.
Sorry if you expected more, but I am still the same great person I was before but with more knowledge on the world.

everyone's *truely* a little bit racist

we all judge no matter what, some people are just much worse.

First off, I rarely get to see any people of my race in movies or shows so seeing a Persian family in crash really hit home to me. It reminded me so much of my family and it stinks to know that many people don’t know much about my race.

“Everyone's a little bit racist
Sometimes.
Doesn't mean we go
Around committing hate crimes.
Look around and you will find No one's really color blind.
Maybe it's a fact
We all should face
Everyone makes judgmentsBased on race.”

… is what I think! Race will never go away. We all look different, so what! it’s the ones who learn to oppress the bit of racist they got in um who are the strongest. I think over time people will grow to be less racist because society keeps changing.

....everyone is a little bit racist...

First, I want to start by sharing something I have been doing for a while. When ever surveys or tests and all that jazz show up in my life, if the question of race comes up, I don’t answer. What does it matter? Really?

So I remember back my freshman year, my Reading enrichment teacher was reading off some stats that the school had up with the different grades of races, along with the percentages in the population. I said why do we do this? Why does it matter if someone else is different. So what if one race is smarter then the other, doesn’t it just ask for more judgment in the world? She didn’t know what to say so she just said the school has to do it legally. I don’t even know if its true, but it seems like not many people think it through. With these polls, we only create more stereotype and reason to judge others.

I have this friend who is classified as Asian. She was in regular courses and told me many students wondered why she wasn’t in an AP course. They thought all Asians are smart. It hurt her feelings and made it more of a hassle to get to class because people judged her because she didn’t “fit” her race.

No matter what, internally, we all have judgments about race. We all learn to let it pass because in these times, we all need to learn to love and accept one another and celebrate our differences.

so tonight ii was with a group who might be well assosiated with the upper middle class. one person was wealthy enough to have a driver take her here. when i pulled up to the house, i saw a man sitting in a car outside my house. i was wondering why is he sitting there and who is he? i walked in and find out hes a driver. and i tell them it makes me sad that hes sitting there while his boss is having a blast with people and food. i asked why just leave him there and the response was well hes getting paid good money. to them, they can do anything to anyone as long as they give um the money. i think to myself how much the working class gets controlled and manipulated to do what the upper class say. all this because of the good old american dollar. same with the idea of paying more for taxes for more money. many people feel cheated becase there good earned dollar is going to people who cant pay for the hospital. i think to myself, arent we all equal? we were put on this earth to live in harmony with each other but i guess because we are all different species of humans we cant get along and work together side by side without being better then everyone else. it kills me that most people will never learn to just live and help everyone else out whether they earned what they have or not. isnt that the good thing to do? and dont we all strive to be better people anyway? that should be our goal; work together side by side and accept everyone for what they can offer to the world because every time we forget about that working class person, we miss out on a whole world of ideas and concepts because they dont have money. i mean think back to world war 2. think of the 6 million who died. think about all the science and technology and ideas are lost with those lives because there lives got taken away because people thought they were better then everyone. so lets work together and make this place better for everyone.

Stay Classy Stevenson

Now I know I might just be stating the obvious but Stevenson kids don’t realize that stuff they get on a daily basis only apply to their own class. Many kids expect to get a car and a license at 16. When I go hang out with my friend from Chicago, her nor her friends have a car. They don’t have a use for one. When they saw me pull up in my dads car, it was totally weird for them to see. Many of the students don’t realize that chance comes from being middle to upper middle. Same with the idea of college, many of us just expect to go to a big school because that’s what Stevenson tells us we should do. I started asking around my friend from San Jose and he said many of his friends don’t go to school and no one from his family ever graduated. That is just something that happens in his area. When I told him how Stevenson runs there school, it sounds totally foreign to him. At his school, they don’t even really care much about the SAT when here at Stevenson, its everything! The reason why we do better is because many of us can afford those tutors to help us when we need it. Its all a gift that we have what we have, but, its so easy to forget that this goes hand in hand with the class we were raised in.

Slipin Through the Cracks

Slipping through the cracks:
Hearing the story of the guy who got life in jail for being a middle man upset me. It stinks about his life being totally gone because of weed. But I started to think, this kind of stuff happens every day with different cases and it’s the ones we hear on TV. The media glamorizes these stories like it’s a new TV drama. Like Michael Jackson, for all we know he could have been innocent but he past through the loop hole some couldn’t get through. The reason the law was made was to punish people and it can’t be always perfectly fair. Someone with get kind of screwed and someone will be really screwed. That guy got really screwed. But in order for some of us to get fair trials I feel that some have to take a bigger hit. And another thing, our legal system is always changing. One day it will be weed gets you life, another say it will be parking over the line at Stevenson. There will ALWAYS be someone screwed.
(… another time people get screwed is social class. Not everyone can be rich so the poor people have to take the hit for it now.)

saints and roughnecks.

Hollywood

Lets see who is a saint! So I would say Martha Stewart because up to the point she was caught, she probably thought she could get away with all the trading. And then…. The good girl of TV with an already huge salary, wants more! Now she reminds me of the classic case of the upper class getting away with everything. Yes, that’s exactly what we read in class, but, I think now people know this and are conscious of it. They know they can get away with there actions.

Then we have my girl Lindsey Lohan. She has got to be the rough neck. She always gets in trouble for crashing cars and drugs. She is always in the eyes of the cops because they know she is capable of all this. And she cant get away.

Both have media on them but Martha gives a vide out to people that she is only a sweet little old lady who runs a crafty show. And Lindsey gives the impression that she doesn’t care what all those people think.

what you got under your shirt will make them pay for the things that they did

a dark song that i cant help but love
Teenagers By My Chemical Romance

They're gonna clean up your looks
With all the lies in the books
To make a citizen out of you
Because they sleep with a gun
And keep an eye on you, son
So they can watch all the things you do
Because the drugs never work
They're gonna give you a smirk
'Cause they got methods of keeping you clean
They're gonna rip up your heads,Your aspirations to shreds
Another cog in the murder machine

They said all teenagers scare the living shit out of me
They could care less as long as someone'll bleed
So darken your clothes or strike a violent pose
Maybe they'll leave you alone, but not me

The boys and girls in the clique
The awful names that they stick
You're never gonna fit in much, kid
But if you're troubled and hurt
What you got under your shirt
Will make them pay for the things that they did

This song tells us the reasons behind shooting. Kids get called names all the time and they put down your entire life. And what they got under there shirts (guns) will make them pay. It mentions the cliques which are always the people who are one sided and don’t see anything else in this world but themselves. And Stick: when you hear a name so many times, people tend to repeat it. I honestly don’t think the phrase that’s so gay is just something that everyone does. Someone started saying it and then someone else said it and then it just became a part of peoples vocabulary. Its completely pathetic. And no the drugs never work. You cant take a pill to make people not make fun of you. Just like that’s so gay happened, names you call certain people stick. Everyone joins in to pick on a kid, they will continue because they know its not them. I could go on and on about the message in this song. But you can read it yourself and think about how you feel. And this songs video was actually supposed to come out right around the time of the Virginia Tech shooting but was delayed because they re-edited it to make it more suitable for the viewers.

As much as it sounds bad to say, I justify these shooters for there rage and anger. No I do not think they should be killing people, but, they have every right to be angry. It seems that the people in our class don’t see it that way. After hearing a comment in class that was clearly based on there own bubble, made me realize how little some people see. Just saving a few phrases directly or indirectly can make this song into a reality. These kids who get shot specifically by the shooters needed to learn a lesson but never did and it cost them there lives. No they shouldn’t die, of course not, but no one ever has sympathy with the shooter. I have sympathy with them are human beings not as killers. People lived there lives every day and new these people were being treated badly by peers yet they either joined in or did nothing to stop it. Why haven’t people learned to love one another and not make fun of each other. that’s the only way we can prevent this stuff. We should try to embrace these people and not hurt them. I don’t understand why this keeps happening every where. People need to quit. These boys needed someone by there side and clearly no one was there. It seems like people were asking for a backlash. Sorry but that’s reality. We are the reason for these boys rage. We need to be the cure to the problem because its all in our hands.

*Just wanted to say something here I said in class. Its white boys because even though we don’t have a true definition for the word normal, a white middle class male has got to be close. They aren’t all too special and there problems seem tiny compared to females and minorities.

play time.

frick. i had this whole thing written about little patriots and how its just like the article and it all got deleted. FML.

well it woulda been my second blog anyway so it dosnt matter. uggg!

fail.

Agents of my life! (the article is so true!)

Gosh the article is nuts. So much in that is true and surprising. First off, the whole day care thing how it doesn’t matter how much you spend, the child has a better chance to have behavioral problems if they attend a day care. I guess after reading it, it sounds kind of obvious. Less time with parents, less bond. that’s what being a teen is all about so why should a parent give away the greatest time in life to bond since once they hit 8, many think they are independent and can own the world.
Universality: a word to an idea in my head. So I am a little patriots teacher and yes the kindergarteners are so sweet, but, they come from an area where people can be a little spoiled. I’m pretty sure this happens in most kindergartens everywhere, but I know for us, it takes some ordering around to get them all to clean up. It could be because that’s what happens at home. Also, I think at least half the class went away on elaborate vacations and some of them didn’t even like it all that much making me think because they have so much, opportunity’s that would be rare to some students, is looked down upon. Basically my point is when they cry for something they want or there is a fight, they don’t always win. They don’t have there parents doing everything for them like defending them. They have to go by the school rules and be equal. Even today, a student gave me those angelic eyes and had a little pout trying to be cute just so I would listen to her. It doesn’t work on us like parents so its cool to see the equality.
“From the people we rub shoulders with at work, we learn not only a set of skills but also a perspective on the world”. - so true. My life has changed so much since I started my first job junior year and my second last may. Working with people in there mid 20’s trying to make ends meet, makes me value my life even more. I know with that job, I couldn’t pay off the car my dad lets me use, but, no matter how much I make, the lessons I learn from all the people I work with will be with me till the day I die. I learned so much about religion and its negative impacts from my manager which helped me formulate my own opinion changing my life forever. I learned how to make smoothies and put together a complicated orange machine. I’ve learned to treat customers with respect. I feel so accomplished to see how much I have learned from work in the last year.
Biggest shocker in this article is how these people actually researched the idea of what makes a ’popular girl.’ Family background, physical appearance, the ability to attract popular boys. Sounds just like my middle school. All the girls who looked pretty and had some sort of a chest and wore make up seemed to have more friends, specially with the athletic boys. And also in the article it says your in or your out of the inner peer group. Boy could that be any truer. The kids in the middle of in and out have it the worst because they know that they can be looked down upon if they don’t wear the right clothing, shoes, or make up making them so critical of their lives and lowers there confidence if they don’t get in. The kids outside either are smart like my cousin who thinks this clique stuff in 6th grade is stupid, or has no confidence what so ever. And the people inside? Now they are the worst, if they mess up everyone knows. And they have a fear that will consume them because they don’t know what it feels like to be outside. This whole idea is what starts people on the wrong path to high school. The ones who are in the core generally from what I’ve seen, end up not being well liked in high school because many students are over the idea of inner and outer circles yet these students clearly are not.
I need to stop talking! Goodnight!

Boo Boston Market

*random blog*

so remember when we were reading about how americans are lazy and like quick fixes.... well look what i found on Boston Markets website:

http://www.bostonmarket.com/supermarket

"The thing about making dinner is - you've got to make it. You start with shopping for all the ingredients. Then you go home, and this is where it gets fun. Because ingredients need to be chopped, diced, measured, mixed, and then cooked (or baked) until they're ready to serve.
That sounds like a lot of work. And who wants to work when the good stuff is waiting?
Check out the newest thing in the deli section of your supermarket, Boston Market meal solutions. Grab it, heat it, enjoy it. It's everything you'd expect-craveable chef-inspired recipes made with wholesome natural ingredients. And, they're ready to heat, so that means dinner is ready in minutes.

Blogdays with Morrie.

Your not dead till your dead. The sad thing is people never die like Morrie. I mean imagine the confidence level of people who know they will die in the next few months? Its like what is the point of making myself happy when I wont have any memory of the fact in a few months? I think the sociology behind it is that life doesn’t matter anymore. Why can’t we just look at life like it’s a vacation. We only get to come on this vacation for 80 or what ever years and we enjoy every second of it because we want to get away from the reality. The reality in this matter not being alive. Just because the vacations ending doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy what is left of it. I would think once your this old, life doesn’t have any rules. You can enjoy it how ever you want. Take risks because if those risks work out then what an experience you’ll get! I mean Morrie could have sat in a nursing home and rotted away. I mean why waste time with someone who will be gone. The great thing about Morrie living on is that he still changed the world long after his death. He taught Mitch the value of life which he passed on to the world with the book and movies. And every year when students see this movie, they can pass on Morrie to everyone and truly learn to value life.

Hmm! We talked this week about how our norms here in America look totally bizarre to those from Germany and ex. Well we never seem to discus all the differences we have coast to coast. I just wanted to mention some weird things I have seen through some of my journeys. I went to California and Reno a few months back and I had no idea what a straight away was or that pretty much all the schools in the area were outdoors. And when my Reno friend came to my town, he was shocked at the distance between stores and the time its takes to get to them, as well as the thing we call a basement. It just reinforces the fact that we are all different, DUH. My idea I am trying to get at is we have this stuff in our daily lives every time we see people from other states on TV and such and many of us still don’t see the difference. Even though the things I mentioned were more physical, there are plenty non-material culture out there that different coast don’t see to share. And it makes it that much easier to understand my own American culture since I see it differently though every person I meet.
Another thing I loved is the idea of limited weekend hours in Germany. I start to think of some people I work with and I wonder when they get a chance to breath. One of my managers has worked 15 days in a row and I don’t know how he does it. I start thinking if he had that weekend, how nice would it be? I feel like people NEED to sacrifice all they have just to make ends meet! I mean isn’t the point of being alive, to actually be able to live and enjoy yourself? Yes, finances suck and people are going to be screwed, but, if most places were closed on weekends, then most people wouldn’t have to work. It would put all of us at an equal playing field. I mean maybe less stuff would be done a week in a store, but, the same effect will happen anywhere so why not give people a break? The reason weekends were created was to give people a break and after watching movies like the high cost of low prices, I wondered when these people could get a weekend. I just feel bad for people who have to be slaves for work, its just kind of unfortunate. Oh, did I even mention the stress it would take off peoples back? Think about the heart attacks we were prevent. And don’t people do better jobs when they aren’t on constant pressure? I know I do! And looking at Stevenson, all the people who aren’t smart freaks that come out of the factory are people who are under the pressure and if they don’t get to where they should be, their confidence decreases causing even more emotional harm to themselves. This all truly does stem from the weekend, I can just feel it. So teachers should re-consider homework on weekends or even homework in general. Thanks!

The article has diagnosed me with Affluenza. The first thing it does to me is diss me for being a follower of black Friday. that’s the one day a year I get to blow off my money and that happiness doesn’t ware out till a month later. But the article is right, if it wasn’t our society putting it in our heads that black Friday is the best day for deals, I wouldn’t be shopping at 1am. I think our intentions our good trying to save money and all, but, when we get too into this idea, the companies end up gaining the most.
Companies like Wal-mart sell expensive items for cheap for one reason: Impulse. You wait on the curb all night on black Friday just to snatch one of the few Wiis they have in stock at a good price. Next thing you know, the lady next to you knocked you out and you didn’t get that Wii. What are you going to do now? Shop some more. Many of those people didn’t get what they waited for so they end up spending money on other items at the store that aren’t heavily discounted making the stores much more money. We are in the age where shopping list are obsolete. People walk in and see what they like and buy it whether they planed to or not. Like they said in the article, the ladies at mall of America came to buy a few items yet they ended up buying other stuff they liked. Now because Affluenza is a strong virus, people can not control the need to walk in the mall. This virus makes it almost impossible to walk into a store and now spend any money. Its going to take a lot of work, but this can be cured. All we need is to find a better activity to do with our time specially with the economy in the dumps. Its going to take will power, but, if the individual puts their mind to it, they can create the first vaccine for Affluenza.

The Social FOOD CHAIN

Social Construction of RealityHow is their reality in the neighborhood socially constructed? What are the unwritten rules that govern how you can or can’t act? How do you think this construction came about? Can you see their racist attitudes as a social construction?
The concept behind this area is that your in the center of it our your outside fearing it.
The first part of where you see this is Sonny. He is the center of everything and everyone around him fears of what he is capable of just like C’s father said.
The second part you see this is with C’s friends. The center of the situation is their violence with the black people we see throughout the movie. C was on the outskirts fearing it. You can clearly see his fear when he is in the car with the boys going to commit a hate crime.
The rule with these two groups is that you let it be no matter how bad their actions are because you don’t want to face any consequences for standing up. This happens the same way when C doesn’t rat on Sonny when he shot the man when he was younger.
This may be a stretch on how this started, but, I will state it any way. I feel like when the Italian population first came about, everyone was equal since everyone started at the bottom. Someone didn’t like that idea so they gained power by putting fear into everyone creating power. This power must have been inherited to Sonny from who knows. I think it comes from humans always wanting to be the best and because not everyone can be the best, people get left behind. This also gets me to the racist ideas that maybe they want to do this because coming to America as foreigners, they are not high with social status so maybe looking down on black people is a way to raise up their status. Basically a social food chain. This same thing happens with the Italians because the real mobsters like Sonny are top and the younger guys like C’s friends want to be like that so they do bad things on purpose to make them seem more bad ass. Sonny is smart enough to know how stupid they are.

"Save the cheerleader save the world...."

No not really. Any Heros fan needs to know that quote though. Great show, check it out. Anyway, the last few days we talked about this boat situation. We had to pick people off the boat in order to help some survive. Now while most people will save this pregnant cheerleader character, I would rather choose someone with more to show to this word. Yes, if we save her and I guess her boyfriend too, we can add 1 more life to this world. But, look at the lives we have on this boat. We know for sure that these people are successful, why give up there life for a potential child that might not be so bright. And why must we keep this baby around when the world already has almost 7 billion people? That’s just the start of it. My real argument is why does she get special treatment because she is pregnant? And since when do we count a pregnant person as two people? Some do, but I don’t see why. This gets me to the argument of abortion and blah, blah, blah, with all the conservatives BS. Any who, why does she get special treatment? She is a human just like the rest of them. And in class today, we talked about keeping on the strong, and she clearly isn’t strong almost being due. Another point I have is that look at what this couple has accomplished, they did silly things like play football. I don’t think there was much effort on education made by these two if what they care about is sports. Even if the Nobel prize in literature guy isn’t all what hes known to be, he still got farther in his life then these two probably have. Why waste room on a boat for a family that isn’t likely to impact this world? I really don’t think this baby is going to be the next Einstein, and even if he was, it would take another 15+ years for this world to see that. Thanks for reading!

To Jenny: yes but right now, we have already cut off some talented people like the lit guy, why keep her?

To Sal: yes i know its a little bit off the point of the micro world they made, but, if i were on that ship, i wouldn't want someone like thats life to go before mine. why should i die because im not pregnant?

Schwalbe and My Life!

It’s no secret that I’m an advocate for the gay community. One thing I do to help out is that when people say ‘that’s so gay’ or use the f word to describe objects for people, I tend to speak my mind. I hate it when people say that because they don’t understand the severity of their words. As I was reading, Schwalbe mentions the idea of racist jokes for the intention of being funny. He also says it reinforces that people are stupid, vain, immoral, or inferior. He says “the sentiments expressed in the joke might decrease sensitivity to others’ feelings and to their needs for help” and make people seem unworthy of friendship. He also states that it can be subtle and have a delayed effect and it doesn’t matter if harm wasn’t intended. Its something I see every day at Stevenson. People call every little thing gay and don’t think about others who may here them. I start thinking of the kids who are not open about their orientation who have to hear stuff like that every single day. Like Schwalbe says it decreases sensitivity to others so that when this person is open about them selves, people might think they are ‘immoral or stupid.’ In the issue of the Statesman that came out before break, I spoke about this issue because teachers now a days don’t seem to care when these harsh words are said in their classrooms. The reason I stand so strong about this issue you can tell many different races by sight but you can’t always tell who is gay. So when making a racist joke about African American, for example, students will generally stay away from anyone of that race so they don’t get offended. But when students are gay, many times you can’t tell and they end of saying these offensive words, and the poor student is forced to hear it. And I hope as Schwalbe says later, “if we understand how others circumstances differ from ours, we are more likely to show compassion for them and grant them respect they deserve as human beings.”

My world is trapped in a bubble. How? It’s the greedy teenagers thinking only about themselves. When I maybe just a little freshman, I’d get money from my dad and shop till I dropped because it seemed “normal” in an area like ours. I wanted a camera, I got it, I wanted a new wardrobe, I got it, I wanted a new Ipod, and I got it! And I thought I deserved all these things from my parents. It just seemed like something that parents just had to do…. Clearly, that way of living is nothing like my life today. I started seeing life from outside the bubble of Stevenson. Ever since I started work junior year, I have learned that if my dad isn’t around, then I needed to support myself. I realize I don’t need to spend $100 every time I step into a mall. I’ve learned to put away my hard earned money for college. Unfortunately, many kids here at Stevenson don’t see out side this bubble. I was sitting my consumer class and we were talking about wants and needs. The teacher picks a boy to tell him something he needs. This teenage boy had the nerve to say “ummm, a car” and I was ready to slap that brat across the face. So being someone who has a voice, I called him out on it and told him there is a world outside of here that getting a car is nearly impossible. I, still in shock, saw the rest of the class defending this boy saying they need a car to go to work an d ‘stuff’. I start thinking that the cars these kids have are paid for by their parents yet they work what? Like minimum wage jobs? They would never have the money to pay for that car. I just think its unfortunate that kids today don’t see that there is a bigger world out there and their view is skewed. One day when they need to work for themselves, maybe then they will see this world. *Random: in the start of the class, the teacher asked who worked and only a few people have managed to keep a job. Around half the class said they had a job but they unfairly got fired and just made up excuses for themselves. It made me feel so sad for these students.* I hope they can one day see the bigger picture of this world and lose this greed that Stevenson kids have so much of. HAF K

Im Shaily (Shy-lee)

Yup yup!

My First Blogger Blog!

hey! I'm Shaily and I'm currently in my sociology class making my own blog. I've been blogging ever since the summer before high school. I use my myspace and my youtube channel (vlog) to talk to people. Now that i have a brand new fresh blog, I can make it more interesting since my high school blog got boring after I only posted surveys! I can't wait to work with blogger on this new creation of mine! Stay tuned!
