The article has diagnosed me with Affluenza. The first thing it does to me is diss me for being a follower of black Friday. that’s the one day a year I get to blow off my money and that happiness doesn’t ware out till a month later. But the article is right, if it wasn’t our society putting it in our heads that black Friday is the best day for deals, I wouldn’t be shopping at 1am. I think our intentions our good trying to save money and all, but, when we get too into this idea, the companies end up gaining the most.
Companies like Wal-mart sell expensive items for cheap for one reason: Impulse. You wait on the curb all night on black Friday just to snatch one of the few Wiis they have in stock at a good price. Next thing you know, the lady next to you knocked you out and you didn’t get that Wii. What are you going to do now? Shop some more. Many of those people didn’t get what they waited for so they end up spending money on other items at the store that aren’t heavily discounted making the stores much more money. We are in the age where shopping list are obsolete. People walk in and see what they like and buy it whether they planed to or not. Like they said in the article, the ladies at mall of America came to buy a few items yet they ended up buying other stuff they liked. Now because Affluenza is a strong virus, people can not control the need to walk in the mall. This virus makes it almost impossible to walk into a store and now spend any money. Its going to take a lot of work, but this can be cured. All we need is to find a better activity to do with our time specially with the economy in the dumps. Its going to take will power, but, if the individual puts their mind to it, they can create the first vaccine for Affluenza.

The Social FOOD CHAIN

Social Construction of RealityHow is their reality in the neighborhood socially constructed? What are the unwritten rules that govern how you can or can’t act? How do you think this construction came about? Can you see their racist attitudes as a social construction?
The concept behind this area is that your in the center of it our your outside fearing it.
The first part of where you see this is Sonny. He is the center of everything and everyone around him fears of what he is capable of just like C’s father said.
The second part you see this is with C’s friends. The center of the situation is their violence with the black people we see throughout the movie. C was on the outskirts fearing it. You can clearly see his fear when he is in the car with the boys going to commit a hate crime.
The rule with these two groups is that you let it be no matter how bad their actions are because you don’t want to face any consequences for standing up. This happens the same way when C doesn’t rat on Sonny when he shot the man when he was younger.
This may be a stretch on how this started, but, I will state it any way. I feel like when the Italian population first came about, everyone was equal since everyone started at the bottom. Someone didn’t like that idea so they gained power by putting fear into everyone creating power. This power must have been inherited to Sonny from who knows. I think it comes from humans always wanting to be the best and because not everyone can be the best, people get left behind. This also gets me to the racist ideas that maybe they want to do this because coming to America as foreigners, they are not high with social status so maybe looking down on black people is a way to raise up their status. Basically a social food chain. This same thing happens with the Italians because the real mobsters like Sonny are top and the younger guys like C’s friends want to be like that so they do bad things on purpose to make them seem more bad ass. Sonny is smart enough to know how stupid they are.

"Save the cheerleader save the world...."

No not really. Any Heros fan needs to know that quote though. Great show, check it out. Anyway, the last few days we talked about this boat situation. We had to pick people off the boat in order to help some survive. Now while most people will save this pregnant cheerleader character, I would rather choose someone with more to show to this word. Yes, if we save her and I guess her boyfriend too, we can add 1 more life to this world. But, look at the lives we have on this boat. We know for sure that these people are successful, why give up there life for a potential child that might not be so bright. And why must we keep this baby around when the world already has almost 7 billion people? That’s just the start of it. My real argument is why does she get special treatment because she is pregnant? And since when do we count a pregnant person as two people? Some do, but I don’t see why. This gets me to the argument of abortion and blah, blah, blah, with all the conservatives BS. Any who, why does she get special treatment? She is a human just like the rest of them. And in class today, we talked about keeping on the strong, and she clearly isn’t strong almost being due. Another point I have is that look at what this couple has accomplished, they did silly things like play football. I don’t think there was much effort on education made by these two if what they care about is sports. Even if the Nobel prize in literature guy isn’t all what hes known to be, he still got farther in his life then these two probably have. Why waste room on a boat for a family that isn’t likely to impact this world? I really don’t think this baby is going to be the next Einstein, and even if he was, it would take another 15+ years for this world to see that. Thanks for reading!

To Jenny: yes but right now, we have already cut off some talented people like the lit guy, why keep her?

To Sal: yes i know its a little bit off the point of the micro world they made, but, if i were on that ship, i wouldn't want someone like thats life to go before mine. why should i die because im not pregnant?

Schwalbe and My Life!

It’s no secret that I’m an advocate for the gay community. One thing I do to help out is that when people say ‘that’s so gay’ or use the f word to describe objects for people, I tend to speak my mind. I hate it when people say that because they don’t understand the severity of their words. As I was reading, Schwalbe mentions the idea of racist jokes for the intention of being funny. He also says it reinforces that people are stupid, vain, immoral, or inferior. He says “the sentiments expressed in the joke might decrease sensitivity to others’ feelings and to their needs for help” and make people seem unworthy of friendship. He also states that it can be subtle and have a delayed effect and it doesn’t matter if harm wasn’t intended. Its something I see every day at Stevenson. People call every little thing gay and don’t think about others who may here them. I start thinking of the kids who are not open about their orientation who have to hear stuff like that every single day. Like Schwalbe says it decreases sensitivity to others so that when this person is open about them selves, people might think they are ‘immoral or stupid.’ In the issue of the Statesman that came out before break, I spoke about this issue because teachers now a days don’t seem to care when these harsh words are said in their classrooms. The reason I stand so strong about this issue you can tell many different races by sight but you can’t always tell who is gay. So when making a racist joke about African American, for example, students will generally stay away from anyone of that race so they don’t get offended. But when students are gay, many times you can’t tell and they end of saying these offensive words, and the poor student is forced to hear it. And I hope as Schwalbe says later, “if we understand how others circumstances differ from ours, we are more likely to show compassion for them and grant them respect they deserve as human beings.”
